Science Assessment Map – Sample at 3.25

Samples are available for the following tasks:

The life of a large marine animal

Context

Students were asked to find and use information to develop a poster about the interactions of a marine animal with the other organisms in its habitat. They identified four relationships such as feeding (producer/consumer), breeding, cooperation and competition. They then drew a food chain that included the animal they chose. Students were given three 45 minute sessions to complete the task. This task required that students had previous experience in being able to identify factors that affect the survival of living things and were able to distinguish examples of living (biotic) factors which affect survival.

The element of the Science knowledge and understanding Level 4 standard addressed by this task is:

(Students) identify and explain the relationships that exist within and between food chains in the environment.

Sample

The following work sample, and the related Science 3.25 progression point examples, illustrate the kind of response that students produce as they progress towards the Level 4 standard.
