Science Assessment Map – Sample at 2.25
Making butter
Students were asked to make butter from cream, then record their observations. Students were asked to decide whether this change is reversible or irreversible and to explain their answer.
Students were given 30 to 40 minutes to complete the task. They worked in groups of four with some assistance from their teacher. Each student was expected to complete a worksheet.
This task required that students had experience recording observations.
The element of the Science knowledge and understanding Level 3 standard addressed by the task is:
Students describe examples of … non-reversible changes in substances.
The elements of the Science at work Level 3 standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) … conduct and report … on experiments …
(Students) … use a range of appropriate methods to record observations …
Sample
The following work sample, and the related Science 2.25 progression point example, illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce as they progress towards the Level 3 standard.
1. What does the cream look like?

2. Draw diagrams to show how you made the butter.

3. What did the butter look like?

4. Would you be able to make the butter turn back into cream? Can you say why (or why not)?

Annotation
Science knowledge and understanding – 2.25
- Recognises change is irreversible but does not explain why.
Science at work – 2.25
- Records information consistent with the properties of cream.
- Constructs a sequence of drawings to indicate experimental procedure but does not label or number the steps.
- Records information about some of the properties of butter.
