Mathematics Assessment Map – Sample at Level 1
My own sums
Students had a set of 20 similar pens, paper and a four function (arithmetic) calculator. They were asked to make up some of their own addition (plus) and subtraction (take away) problems, solve them using the pens as required, and describe each problem and their answer.
Students were then asked to check their working using a four function (arithmetic) calculator.
The elements of the Working mathematically standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) … check their work with respect to computations …
(Students) devise and follow ways of recording computations using the digit keys and +, − and = keys on a four function calculator.
The following sample illustrates the kind of response that students typically produce when they have achieved the elements of the standard addressed by the task.

This sample is also used in Number Level 1.
Working mathematically – Level 1
- The student completes a range of addition and subtraction problems, using numbers in the range 1–20, with the assistance of concrete materials (pens), and correctly written number sentences using numerals +, − and = symbols. Several of the numerals are written as the mirror image to the standard form, for example, some of the 2s and 3s, both 9s and the 7.
- The student then correctly checks each calculation using a four function (arithmetic) calculator, using deliberate and slow key strokes, while verbally describing the corresponding process, such as ‘4 plus 6 equals 10’ and ‘fourteen take away five equals nine’. This indicates familiarity with +, − and = symbols on the calculator.
