Mathematics Assessment Map – Sample at Level 6

Bottles and barrels (includes employability skills)

Context

In this activity, students calculated the volume of a cylinder and then applied this knowledge to calculating the volume of a wine barrel. They were also asked to reflect on their problem solving strategies.

The elements of the Number standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) use appropriate estimates to evaluate the reasonableness of the results of calculations involving rational and irrational numbers, and the decimal approximations for them.

(Students) carry out computations to a required accuracy in terms of decimal places and/or significant figures.

See Bottles and barrels worksheet (Doc - 1MB)

Samples

The following samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students typically produce when they have achieved the elements of the standard addressed by this task.
