Mathematics Assessment Map – Sample at Level 1
Samples are available for the following tasks:
Boys or girls
Context
Students were asked to find and record combinations of two different sets (boys and girls) for a given total number of students.
The teacher posed this problem: ‘Ten new children are coming to school. But we haven’t been told how many are boys and how many are girls.’ Students were asked to find and show possible combinations of boys and girls. They were asked to record their findings in short ways. Concrete materials such as a pens were available to students.
The elements of the Number standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) form small sets of objects from simple descriptions and make simple correspondences between those sets.
(Students) count the size of small sets using the numbers 0 to 20.
Sample
The following sample illustrates the kind of response that students typically produce when they have achieved the elements of the standard addressed by this task.

Annotation
Number – Level 1
- The student uses the letters B and G to designate a ‘boy’ or a ‘girl’ respectively and writes three combinations satisfying the required conditions. The letters drawn were counted by ones to ensure the total was 10, and when asked by the teacher to write a number sentence, wrote 5 + 5 = 10.
Elements of Number
