Number stories
Context
Students were asked to devise and illustrate, with story and pictures, an expression with two or more integers that add to 20, after being shown two examples. Students could complete the drawing for this task by hand or using a computer package such as Kid Pix ® Studio, The Learning Company ®, or Microsoft ® Office Clip Art.

Number – 1.5
- The student shows the correct number of objects with a sum of 20 (B) but has not made the separate parts of the sum clear. For example, 7 apples are on the top line but 4 and then 9 oranges are together as a row of 13 oranges. (A)
- The link between the numbers and the story is not clear.
- Writes a number sentence with the numbers in the correct order but the formal symbol for equality (=) is not used. (C)
- Some numbers are written in the mirror image to standard form. (D)
