Mathematics Assessment Map – Sample at 0.5
Number card
Context
Students were given a rectangular card in three sections (see stimulus material – Image A). One section was then folded half-way over the other two (see stimulus material – Image B), and students were asked to draw in a small collection of dots, on each of the two visible sections of the folded card. They were asked to open up the card, and write on the inside of the card a number sentence representing the total number of dots shown.
The elements of the Number standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) form small sets of objects from simple descriptions …
(Students) use materials to model addition … by the aggregation (grouping together) … of objects.

Annotation
Number – 0.5
- The student draws two (small) collections of dots, one of five dots and one of three dots in the two separate sections of the front of the card, using arrays commonly seen on dice.
- Writes the corresponding number sentence inside, showing knowledge of number names using the correct numerals. The numeral 3 is written as the mirror image of the standard form. The student writes the correct answer for the total number of dots shown (by counting the aggregate number of dots).
