Victoria – A Great Place to Be
Context
Students were asked to describe the human and physical characteristics of their local environment or another environment within Victoria in which they were familiar with.
Students worked individually and had one week to gather information and one hour to complete the report in class.
The presentation was to be in the form of a report. Students were provided with the following subheadings for the report:-
- Title of Area
- Description of Area
- Things to Do
- Things to See
- Places to Go
- How to Get There
Students were required to include in the report under one or more headings:
- An example of how people have changed the area from its natural state.
- Descriptions of natural and man made features of the area.
The elements of the Humanities skills Level 3 standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) identify the location of places on a simple map using an alphanumeric grid and describe direction using the four cardinal compass points.
Sample
This work sample, and the related The Humanities 2.75 progression point examples, illustrate the kind of response that students produce as they progress towards the Level 3 standard.
What are the Grampians?
The Grampians is a national park west of Melbourne.
Things to see
If you want to get a good view of things, then the Balconies is defiantly recommended. It is located half an hour south of Halls Gap. They are a big cliff that overlooks the path you came from.
Annotation
-
Humanities skills – 2.75
- Uses the cardinal compass points south and west to appropriately identify the location of the Grampians and the Balconies, however, does not make reference to an alphanumeric grid to support identification of location.
