English Assessment Map – Sample at Level 3


My Favourite Place (Descriptive writing)

Context

Students were asked to write a response to the topic, My Favourite Place. Following class discussions that encouraged students to identify characteristics of their chosen place, students were given 45 minutes to write. Students worked without assistance from their teacher or fellow students.

The following sample illustrates the kind of response that students typically produce when they have achieved the elements of the standard addressed by the task.

Annotations

The student describes activities and experiences associated with holidaying at Phillip Island.

The student makes appropriate use of verbs throughout to present recall.

The student spells most words correctly with only three errors.

(Sentence 1) The student shows awareness of the reader by beginning with appropriate detail.

(Sentences 2 & 3) The student controls all aspects of sentence construction linking feeling with experience.

(Sentence 3) The student supports meaning by accurately using full stops and commas, with a final ‘run on’ sentence being the only exception.

The  elements of the Writing standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) order information and sequence events using some detail or illustrative evidence …

(Students) meet the needs of audiences by including appropriate background information.

(Students) write a variety of simple and compound sentences and use verb tenses correctly.

(Students) … accurately use full stops, commas and question marks.

(Students) … spell most one- and two-syllable words with regular spelling patterns, and frequently used words which have less regular spelling patterns
