Managing Victoria’s resources
Within a unit of work that combined English with Information and Communications Technology, Communication and Thinking Processes, students researched the issue of managing one of Victoria’s resources. They were able to choose how they would present their research on the issue from the following list: a talk to the class, a letter to the editor of a newspaper, a poster, or a multimedia presentation.
Examples of suitable Victorian resources include: coal, forests, national parks (including marine parks and fisheries) and water.
If the presentation was a talk to the class then the element of the Speaking and listening standard addressed by the task is:
(Students) make effective use of the structures and features of spoken language to deal with complex subject matter in a range of situations.
- define the topic clearly and reasonably
- use palm cards discreetly and effectively
- employ persuasive techniques such as inclusive language, rhetorical questions, repetition
- show thorough attention to body language aspects such as posture, hand gesticulation and eye contact with audience
- utilise pitch, pace and pause to create highly effective oral delivery.
