English Assessment Map – Sample at Level 1

Animal Sort

Context

Students were shown a collection of pictures of animals. Following class discussion on how to describe, compare and sort them, the students were provided with vocabulary cards which they read as a group. The cards could be related to the students’ interests or the current classroom topic of investigation (for example: Pets, The Farm, The Wild, Fast, Slow, Big, Small, Feathers). Students then worked with a partner to illustrate and label different ways of sorting the animals, matching their illustrations with the relevant vocabulary from the card. A follow-up activity involved writing a simple sentence about their sorting. The activity took place over two forty minute sessions.
