What phone?
This sample shows how a particular task can be used to illustrate achievement in more than one domain − in this case the task focuses on the Humanities − Economics and ICT domains.
Students were asked to design and create a budget which would demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of budgeting with the purposes of determining the affordability of a mobile phone. Budget items included savings, income and expenses during a specified period of time. Students were then asked to prepare a written report justifying their choice of phone plan.
The element of the Economic knowledge and understanding Level 5 standard addressed by this task is:
(Students) make informed economic and consumer decisions, demonstrating the development of personal financial literacy.
These work samples, and the related Economics 4.75 progression point examples, illustrate the kind of response that students produce as they progress towards the Level 5 standard.

MY CHOICE OF PHONE
I chose the prepaid option on the phones. The features I liked on this phone are:
- It was cheap
- It had a fair bit of memory
- It was the only option I could afford
|
Advantages – Pre paid
|
Disadvantages – pre paid
|
- You’ve already paid it
- You know how much it’s going to be and you can’t go over the limit
|
- You run out of credit if you use the phone too much
- You have to be somewhere to buy credit
|
|
Advantages - plan
|
Disadvantages - plan
|
- You don’t have to pay for it up front
- It often has better quality features like camera, internet options, voice recording etc.
|
- If you go over the limit, you have to pay more
- You can’t really keep track of how much you are spending
- Debt collectors will come and chase you if you don’t or can’t pay it
- If you lose it or break it, you have to keep paying the plan out.
|
I chose the pre paid because it suited my small budget. Mum doesn’t like mobile phones and there is no way she would let me go on a plan at 12 years old. I get $60 a month pocket money and I don’t want to blow it all on a mobile phone. I have other things I want to buy like sporting gear, hardware and clothes.
