Design, Creativity and Technology Assessment Map - Sample at 2.75

Puppet (Pinocchio)

Context

In an assessment task titled ‘Design and make a puppet for a puppet play’, students were asked to design a puppet with moving parts that incorporated the use of levers. They were also required to make their puppet from two different materials and to use two joining methods.

In order to design and make the puppet, students learnt about the history of puppets and researched different types of puppets. They produced a spider map of ideas about the puppet they intended to make, generated two labelled drawings, listed steps to make the puppet and planned a story incorporating their puppet. They made the puppets, wrote the script and performed a play. They evaluated the puppet using a ‘plus, minus and interesting’ (PMI) table.

The elements of the Investigating and designing Level 3 standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) individually and in teams, generate ideas based on a design brief, demonstrating understanding that designs may need to meet a range of different requirements. They use words, labelled sketches and models to communicate the details of their designs, and clarify ideas when asked.

Students think ahead about the order of their work and list basic steps to make the product or system they have designed.

The elements of the Producing Level 3 standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) use their list of steps and are able to choose appropriate tools, equipment and techniques to alter and combine materials …

(Students) use a variety of simple techniques/processes and a range of materials/ingredients to safely and hygienically alter and combine materials/ingredients and put together components to make products …

The elements of the Analysing and evaluating Level 3 standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) test, evaluate and revise their design, products … in light of feedback they have gained from others. They identify what has led to improvements and describe what they consider to be the strengths and drawbacks of their design, product …

(Students) consider how well a product … functions and/or how well it meets the intended purpose.

Stimulus

Design brief:

Design and make a puppet to be used in a short puppet play. The puppet must have moving parts and be made from at least two materials. Use levers to create at least one moving part and at least two joining methods.

Sample

This work sample, and the related 2.75 Design, Creativity and Technology progression point examples, illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce as they progress towards the Level 3 standard.

Part 1

Annotation

Investigating and designing – 2.75

A. Draws a detailed sketch of a Pinocchio puppet design in response to the design brief for a puppet.
B. Clearly labels features and includes materials, details of construction and planned production steps in order in the drawing.

C. Generates an alternative design for a Pinocchio puppet that shows moving parts and joins in greater detail but is otherwise very similar to the first design and does not include the use of levers.

Producing – 2.75

E. Follows most of the planned production steps to make a Pinocchio puppet.
F. Describes a change made during the production process and provides some reasons for the change.
G. Explains that wire and masking tape were used as joining methods, but assistance from other students was required.

Analysing and evaluating – 2.75

H. Modifies the Pinocchio puppet design to improve the function.
I. Describes movement of the nose in the Pinocchio puppet, achieved by direct manipulation rather than through the use of a lever – a requirement of the design brief.
