Hello. This video is the end result of two days of exploring the city. Our group’s hypothesis was: Melbourne is a great city to busk in. The questions we came up with to confirm or bust this were:
We came up with two methods to answer our questions. Surveying buskers and the public and doing some of our own busking.
We found out that a majority of people enjoy buskers. Some said they gave money while quite a few said they didn’t. Half of the people said they would stop and watch buskers while the other half said they wouldn’t. But everyone said buskers got their attention.
We interviewed a man who played a dulcimer. He performed regularly in the city and had done so for ten years. He enjoyed busking but also did it for a job because it was flexible. He thought he was accepted by the public, but occasionally he had been stolen from and had to learn martial arts to defend himself. But that was a while ago and he said that things had got a lot better over the ten years he’d been playing. He also said that at times he got a lot of attention while other times it was as if he didn’t exist.
In Bourke street mall there was a guitar trio playing. They got a lot of attention. People would stand around them and watch, and clap when they finished a song.
For anyone to be able to busk you have to have a permit. We thought it would be very difficult to get a permit, but in fact, it took us only ten minutes in the morning. When I was busking I felt safe and enjoyed it a lot.
So I think we can safely say our hypothesis was confirmed.
