Milky matters
Milky matters was based primarily on a science focus which incorporated the domains of Health and Physical Education, Thinking Processes and Communication. Students investigated the role of dairy products in providing nutrients for growth and activity, with a particular focus on lactose intolerance. Students were asked to provide advice in the form of a letter, brochure or information chart to Sam, a thirteen year old who had recently been diagnosed as lactose intolerant. The advice focused on the impact of Sam’s lactose intolerance on his food selection, other influences on his food selection, as well as meeting his nutritional needs for growth and activity.
This activity required students to collect and organise information using a thinking tool, evaluate the effectiveness of the thinking tool and evaluate the reliability and usability of the sources of information gathered.
This activity also required students to present their information using an appropriate form and language to convey a clear message whilst meeting the needs of the context, purpose and audience.
The element of the Presenting Level 5 standard addressed by the task is:
(Students) use the communication conventions, forms and language appropriate to the subject to convey a clear message … to meet the needs of the context, purpose and audience.

Presenting - 4.25
- Demonstrates some sequencing of ideas and information but detail is lacking.
- Shows limited use of key terminology, for example, nutrients, lactose intolerance.
- Follows some conventions of a brochure, for example, dot points, headings but spelling conventions are inconsistently applied.
- Does not use illustrations to accurately support information on lactose intolerance.
