Communication Assessment Map - Sample at 3.75
My shelter
Students were asked to complete an integrated studies project in which they were required to construct a model of something useful for their survival if they were lost in the bush and to develop an oral presentation supported by the model. They conducted their own research and each model was then presented to the rest of the class.
Students were provided with an Integrated studies worksheet (Doc - 29KB) which outlined some ideas and explained assessment requirements. Further support was provided through group and class discussion.
This student worked independently to create a model of a bush shelter. She completed Internet-based research and used materials from the school grounds to construct a triangular shelter. Her presentation included a demonstration of her shelter and information about it. The project was assessed on the success of the model and the quality of the presentation. Students were provided with detailed criteria (see sample) to support the preparation of their presentations and their own evaluations.
The elements of the Presenting Level 4 standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) summarise and organise ideas and information, logically and clearly in a range of presentations.
(Students) identify the features of an effective presentation and adapt elements of their own presentations to reflect them.
Using provided criteria, (students) evaluate the effectiveness of their own and others’ presentation
This work sample, and the related Communication 3.75 progression point examples, illustrates the kinds of responses that students produce as they progress towards the Level 4 standard.
