Indigenous leadership
Context
Students were asked to research and produce a biography on an Indigenous leader which included an outline of key achievements and challenges and discussion of particular leadership qualities. This was part of a unit of work which included achievement of rights in Australia.
Teaching and learning activities associated with this assessment task included:
- brainstorming and discussion of the concept of leadership
- brainstorming examples of contemporary Indigenous leaders
- brainstorming research questions.
Students worked in groups to organise and conduct research but were asked to complete an individual presentation or report which could be displayed to the class.
The elements of the Civic knowledge and understanding Level 5 standard addressed by this task are:
(Students) identify and discuss the qualities of leadership through historical and contemporary examples.

- Provides some basic biographical details which include mention of the meaning of the ‘stolen generation’.
- Outlines the challenges faced by Aboriginal footballers and the achievement of another Aboriginal footballer.
- Provides some detail of Michael Long’s personal involvement in ensuring that the AFL acted on racial vilification with some limited explanation of that legislation.
- Identifies other achievements but without specific detail about the causes that were being addressed.
- Identifies some qualities of ‘great’ leadership – ‘standing up’ and ‘courage’.
