Levels of government brochure
Context
Students were asked to complete a proforma information pamphlet about the levels of government. The pamphlet included key people, key features, the structure of government, and the responsibilities of levels of government.
Prior to undertaking this task students completed activities related to the features and functions of the three levels of government in Australia, including the concept of federalism. Students were also introduced to a range of resources on each level of government. Students could work in groups to research content and share information.
Students completed a draft for teacher feedback before completing a presentation copy.
The element of the Civic knowledge and understanding Level 4 standard addressed by this task is:
(Students) describe the three levels of government and some of the key functions of each level. They explain the basic elements of Australia’s federal parliamentary system and key democratic principles and values such as…..equality before the law.

- Provides a simple description of the structure of state and federal government but not local government.
- Outlines the separate roles of government with some implicit comparison of functions.
- Briefly explains that the federal government makes laws but does not mention this for states or local government.
- Provides a simple explanation of how laws benefit all ‘so that everyone is safe, happy and comfortable’.
