Cultural contribution
This sample illustrates how a particular stimulus and task can be used to illustrate achievement at more than one level.
Context
Students were asked to write an illustrated article of approximately 100 words demonstrating their understanding of the contribution of one cultural community to Australian society. They were expected to consider aspects of the chosen culture, such as the arts, food, festivals, sport, business, commerce and industry.
In this task students could work in groups to develop their ideas but were expected to complete the article individually. Prior to the task students were introduced to the concept of a cultural group or community and the diversity of cultural groups in Australia. Students also discussed as a group the meaning of the concepts of culture, community and diversity. They explored the different cultural backgrounds of the students in the class including the contribution different cultural groups have made to Australian society.
The element of the Civic knowledge and understanding Level 4 standard addressed by this task is:
(Students) describe the contribution of various cultural groups ... to Australian identity.
