Civics and Citizenship Assessment Map - Sample at 2.5
Community action plan
Context
Students were asked to develop an action plan to address an issue of concern in the local community. The plan which was developed on a proforma, asked students to consider the tasks, the people, the timeline and the resources which would be needed to address an issue. Students worked in groups to discuss the issues but completed the task individually.
This activity was part of a 6-session teaching and learning sequence where students looked at groups in the community and the ways that citizens can work together to solve problems.
As an introduction, students read and discussed a story on how a community addressed a local issue.
The elements of the Community engagement Level 3 standard addressed by this task are:
(Students) describe some of the roles and purposes of groups in the community.
(Students) identify a local issue and plan possible actions to achieve a desired outcome.
Sample
This work sample, and the related 2.5 Civics and Citizenship progression point examples, illustrates the kind of response that students produce as they progress towards the Level 3 standard.

Annotation
Community engagement – 2.5
- Identifies a local issue to be addressed and implicitly recognises that it is a problem as ‘there lots of it around the school’.
- Identifies a range of actions including posters, more bins, a ‘no packaging’ day, ‘telling people off’, making a video and more ‘MAD” (making a difference).
- Makes some suggestions about responsibilities of individuals and groups in the community.
- Determines timelines for addressing tasks; however some of these would not be realistic.
- Shows a correct awareness of some of resources that would be needed (although local councils would not provide school rubbish bins).
