The Arts Assessment Map - Sample at 0.5
Wild monsters
Context
This work sample illustrates the student art work made for an exhibition at the schools’ Black and White Art Show.
Prior learning
In preparation for the Art Show, the students and their teacher read Where the Wild Things Are (1963) by Maurice Sendak. They talked about monsters and identified their possible physical characteristics and discussed where monsters might be found. Students then used black ink to draw their own monster. The teacher traced the outlines of these drawings onto polystyrene sheets and cut out the shapes. Students then applied texture using paint and decorative mixed media to complete their monsters.
The monsters were made over two to three 45 minute sessions.
The elements of the Creating and making Level 1 standard addressed by the task are:
Students make and share … visual arts works that communicate observations, personal ideas, feelings and experiences. They explore and, with guidance, use a variety of arts elements (on their own or in combination), skills, techniques and processes, media, materials, equipment and technologies in a range of art forms.
Sample
The following work sample, and the related Arts 0.5 progression point examples, illustrate the kind of response that students produce as they progress towards the Level 1 standard.
