Design, Creativity and Technology – Concepts and Skills Charts
Introduction
The Design, Creativity and Technology standards focus on a number of concepts and skills. The charts below identify, for the three dimensions of Investigating and designing; Producing; and Analysing and evaluating, the concepts and skills and the expectations of students at each level.
Key concepts and skills identified for each dimension are:
- Investigating and designing
- Developing and responding to design briefs
- Conducting research
- Communicating design ideas
- Planning of production and appropriate use of resources
- Developing evaluation criteria
- Producing
- Constructing products and/or systems
- Using effective and safe practices during production
- Analysing and evaluating

As students progress from Level 1 to 6 the concepts and skills become more complex. This complexity is developed through:
- providing learning environments that value and promote experiential, practical and applied knowledge and theoretical understanding
- student engagement in the design process
- student access to more sophisticated tools
- providing opportunities for students to be involved in solving open-ended problems.
In some cases, elements of the standards have been used verbatim in the charts; in other cases, the standards include elaborations.
Investigating and designing chart
This chart identifies and, in some cases, elaborates the key concepts and skills in the standards.

Constructing products and/or systems |
Standards do not apply at Levels 1 and 2. The Level 1 learning focus and Level 2 learning focus statements suggest appropriate learning experiences from which teachers can plan relevant teaching and learning activities that support students to develop the concepts and skills.

Use their list of steps and are able to choose appropriate tools, equipment and techniques to alter and combine materials/ingredients and assemble systems components. |

Use a range of measuring, marking, joining/combining techniques to alter materials and finishing/presentation methods, and operate tools and equipment competently, showing consideration of safety and hygiene, and record their progress. |
Work safely/hygienically with a range of tools and equipment, including some which are complex. |
