The Advance Program in the VELS

Introduction

Advance is a school based program that provides practical opportunities for young people to participate in their local community. Available to all Victorian government secondary schools, Advance encourages young people’s participation and volunteering in community life. The essential elements are that young people DO something in their community, that they do it in PARTNERSHIP with a community organisation and that they CHOOSE an issue of concern or interest.

For teachers interested in understanding the links between Advance and the school curriculum, the curriculum content of Advance has been mapped to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. Each Advance learning outcome has been aligned with an element of a VELS standard at Level 5 (Years 7-8) and Level 6 (Years 9-10). There is no expectation that the standards be applied in the Advance program - it is simply a guide for teachers who may wish to use the Advance learning outcomes as the basis for assessing student achievement against the VELS.

The Advance curriculum has also been mapped to the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). To access this document, visit www.youth.vic.gov.au > Grants and programs > Advance > Schools. This has proven to be a useful tool for staff delivering Advance via VCAL.
