Professional Learning

Introduction

School leaders who have led the implementation of the VELS emphasise the importance of managing change effectively. A whole school professional learning strategy is an essential part of the change management process.

Professional learning provides opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge, skills and approaches to teaching and learning. The resulting change is more effective when the professional learning is planned and linked to priorities, whether it be at a whole school, team or individual level. Creating learning communities supports teachers in their endeavours and establishes a culture of valuing professional development.

When planned from a whole school perspective professional learning develops a shared understanding between teachers across the school about the planning, development and implementation of effective curriculum and assessment.
