Case Studies

The following case studies are from schools which have implemented the Victorian Essential Learning Standards through a whole school curriculum planning process. The case studies span primary and secondary schools across government and non-government sectors and illustrate ways in which schools are implementing different curriculum programs to address the VELS.

Each case study contains:

Bairnsdale Secondary College

Bairnsdale Secondary College is a large secondary school in the Gippsland area.

When the VELS was introduced in 2004, the school took the opportunity to undertake a wide ranging review of its whole school curriculum planning processes including timetabling and curriculum planning.

Teachers use a multi-domain approach to developing units of work.

Lakeside Lutheran College

Lakeside Lutheran College is an independent school at Lakeside Pakenham. It opened in 2006 and will be a P to 12 by 2011.

The school developed its curriculum within the VELS framework which supported many of the principles underpinning Lutheran education as well as continuing strong links to the broader community.

An integrated curriculum approach is used throughout the school.

Darley Primary School

Darley primary school is in the Bacchus Marsh area.

The school uses an integrated curriculum program with a strong focus on inquiry learning and developing social competency skills.

With the introduction of the VELS the school reviewed its curriculum program and developed integrated units of work to be delivered over two years.
