Australian Curriculum
The Australian curriculum is being developed for all students from Prep to Year 12, starting with English, mathematics, science and history. Writing teams have commenced scoping the content and structure for each of these learning areas with writing expected to be completed by December 2009.
A second phase of curriculum development will include languages, geography and the arts. The timeline for the development of curriculum for these learning areas is still to be confirmed.
The VCCA continues to play an active role in shaping the direction of this work. It is important to note that this will not impact directly on school programs in Victoria until 2011 at the earliest and not until 2012 for VCE programs. The VCAA will develop advice and professional development programs for schools to assist with the proposed transition to the new Australian curriculum as part of the consultative process. In the meantime, schools will continue to teach and assess all VELS domains and report to parents using the current system. See the VCAA website for more detail about the Australian curriculum and its relationship to the Victorian curriculum.
