Information and Communications Technology - Pathways to VCE, VCE VET and VCAL

As students approach the end of the compulsory years of schooling they begin to make choices about their preferred areas of and pathways for learning. Students choose studies from the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or recognised vocational training through either a Vocational Education Training (VET) program or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) domain provides students with the tools to transform their learning and enrich their learning environment. These tools for visualising thinking, creating information products and communicating locally and globally, assist students to develop skilful thinking and deep understanding in all domains, preparing them well for post-compulsory study. ICT provides a solid foundation for students who wish to pursue further study in ICT or better manage their work for other studies. The knowledge, skills and behaviours students gain through the three dimensions of the ICT standards: Visualising thinking, Creating and Communicating, are readily transferable to workplaces in all industries, where most employees, not only those in the Information Technology (IT) industry, are now required to have ICT skills.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)
The knowledge, understandings and range of skills students develop through the ICT dimensions prepare them well for undertaking Units 3 and 4 IT applications and Units 3 and 4 Software development. These VCE studies prepare students for further study at university or TAFE, as well as for the world of work.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Those wishing to undertake vocational training in ICT can study Certificates II and III in Information Technology (with specialist streams in: Applications, Support or Network administration); Certificates II and III in Multimedia; or the CISCO Networking Academy Program.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
The knowledge, understandings and range of skills students develop through the ICT standards are utilised in the Literacy and Numeracy Skills strand as well as many of the units undertaken as VET Certificates.

School Based Apprenticeship
Students wishing to pursue further studies in ICT through a School Based New Apprenticeship can do so through Certificate III in Information Technology.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
The knowledge, understandings and range of skills students develop through the ICT standards prepare students well for undertaking Information Technology in the Individuals and Societies group of subjects for the IB.
