Information and Communications Technology 4.75

Introduction

This work sample forms part of the assessment map for Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Other parts of the ICT assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The ICT Level 5 standards describe what students should know and be able do at this level.

The assessment task which generated this work sample was designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of selected elements of the standard. The work sample illustrates progress towards, but does not fully demonstrate achievement of, the selected elements of the standard.

Sample at 4.75 – Searching the Internet

Context

Students were asked to locate information on the Internet as part of their research on a topic of their choice. Students were familiar with techniques for using the Internet to find information and with school protocols for correct and appropriate use of the Internet.

As part of the learning and teaching process, the teacher observed and questioned the students who provided evidence of the research processes used.

The elements of the ICT for communicating Level 5 standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) select the most appropriate search engines to locate information on websites. They use complex search strategies to refine their searches. They judge the integrity of the located information based on its credibility, accuracy, reliability and comprehensiveness.

ICT for communicating – 4.75

A. Selects an appropriate general search engine (Google).
B. Enters keywords which are mainly relevant to the search, however, the inclusion of ‘information on’, is superfluous. More targeted words would have assisted in refining the search.
C. Limits search by selecting options from three drop down boxes in Advanced search. (Number of results: 20 is the default; Language: English; Return web pages updated in the: past 3 months). These selections, however, had minimal impact on the number of listings. (290,000)

D. Selects an appropriate general search engine (Google).
E. Enters only one keyword, which results in a massive listing of websites. Additional, relevant keywords would have assisted in refining the search.
F. Refines search by using the Advanced search and selecting one option (without the words: movie).
G. Proposes a strategy for evaluating the reliability of information located in a website, namely cross-checking of facts with other resources.
H. Provides a reason for government sites being credible, however, it is not strongly founded.
