Information and Communications Technology Level 4

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 4 part of the assessment map for Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right.

The ICT Level 4 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 4 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 4 – Claymation Questionnaire

Context

Students worked in groups to previously complete a Claymation movie.

Students were asked to create an assessment tool (questionnaire) which could be used to determine how well the group worked together to complete the project and how much they liked the movie maker software tool.

They individually created the questionnaire using desktop publishing software including techniques such as text boxes for responses, insertion of images and grouping of shapes

The element of the ICT for creating standard addressed by this task is:

(Students) … independently use a range of skills, procedures … to process different data types and produce accurate and suitably formatted products to suit different purposes and audiences.

Sample at Level 4 – Lizzie’s Growth

Context

Using spreadsheet software students worked independently to create a table to record the weight and height of their chicken. Their recorded data was then used to create two charts showing the results of their chicken’s growth. The table and charts were to demonstrate acceptable formatting conventions. The orders and colour were added for visual appeal as the product was to be viewed by other class members for comparison.

The element of the ICT for creating standard addressed by this task is:

(Students) … independently use a range of skills, procedures … to process different data types and produce accurate and suitably formatted products to suit different purposes and audiences.

Sample at Level 4 – Creating an information product to describe a production process

Context

Students were asked to create for a target audience (Year 2 students), an information product that showed the stages involved in making a food product (a cheeseburger). They were familiar with the software (PowerPoint or Publisher) prior to undertaking the task. Students and the teacher took photographs of each key stage of the production process and these images were stored on the school’s computer network. Students were required to select and insert the images that they thought best supported the text in their presentation. A template was not provided or suggested by the teacher.

The elements of the ICT for creating standard addressed by this task are:

(Students) safely and independently use a range of skills, procedures, equipment and functions to process different data types

(Students) ... produce accurate and suitability formatted products to suit different purposes and audiences.

(Students) ... apply conventions and techniques that improve the appearance of the finished product.

Sample at Level 4 – French language ICT project: create an information product about an endangered animal

Context

Students were asked to create an information product that described an endangered animal living on a specific continent. They were familiar with some features of the software (MicroWorlds) prior to undertaking the task. Students imported a map of the world from the school’s network. They selected a continent, coloured it, and then using a list of French language websites supplied by the teacher, researched endangered animals on that continent and chose one to study in detail. Students selected an image of the animal, edited it using Irfanview (image-editing freeware) and created a text box and sound recording for their paragraph about their chosen animal. They edited their animal so that on a mouse click, the text box would appear, their sound wave file would play and then the text box would disappear.

The elements of the ICT for creating standard addressed by this task are:

(Students) safely and independently use a range of skills, procedures, equipment and functions to process different data types and produce accurate and suitably formatted products …

Students select relevant techniques for minimising the time taken to process data …
