The work samples in this section form the Level 3 part of the assessment map for The Humanities. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.
The Humanities Level 3 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 3 standard.
Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.
This sample work was derived from a set of activities focusing on how key places in the local area have changed over time.
Prior to undertaking the task, the teacher assisted students to identify key places such as parks and reserves in the local area. The class selected three places to further investigate. Students worked in groups to find key information on one selected place from given sources. Individually students wrote a description on how the key place was used before European settlement and how it is used now. After students visited the place, they drew a map of it. They developed a map legend to identify some key features. They then used the key features and the compass points to describe their walk around the place.
The element of the Humanities knowledge and understanding standard addressed by the task is:
(Students) describe how aspects of places in their local area have changed over time.
The elements of the Humanities skills standard addressed by the task are:
Students draw simple maps and plans of familiar environments observing basic mapping conventions.
(Students) … describe direction using the four cardinal compass points.
The following sample illustrates the kinds of responses that students typically produce when they have achieved the elements of the standard addressed by the task.
