The Humanities – Economics Level 5

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 5 part of the assessment map for The Humanities – Economics. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The Humanities – Economics Level 5 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 5 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 5 – Current and Future Work Opportunities

Context

Students were asked to prepare a report detailing changes to work practices and work opportunities over time in order to identify trends in a particular industry. Students chose to present their report in the form of either a website or brochure of approximately 350-400 words supplemented by charts, illustrations, graphs, scanned images and links to relevant websites. Students were given five hours of class time.

Prior to undertaking the task, students were introduced to the term ‘industry’ and the concept that there is a range of jobs within an industry. This helped students to define the scope of their chosen industry and to consider the relevance and application of selected information. Students also revised factors influencing opportunities for current and future work, including the impact of technology and changing work practices. This assisted students in locating and selecting appropriate information and effectively analysing and evaluating it.

The element of the Economic knowledge and understanding standard addressed by the task is:

(Students) describe factors that affect … opportunities for current and future work, and explain the relationship between education, training and work opportunities.

The element of the Economic reasoning and interpretation standard addressed by the task is:

Students use the inquiry process to plan economics investigations, analyse and interpret data, and form conclusions supported by evidence.
