The Humanities – Economics Level 4 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 4 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 4 – Product Testing

Context

This work sample is a response to an assessment task entitled ‘What brand of cola will I buy and why?’. They established an hypothesis about what cola they would select, and undertook a taste test of five different colas to test their hypothesis. Students used information and communications technology to record and graph their findings and analysed the results. They were given focus questions as a basis for writing a report evaluating their findings.

Prior to undertaking the task, students were introduced to the concept of consumer choice and identified factors affecting consumer preferences and decision making. They were also introduced to a range of economics terms.

The element of the Economics knowledge and understanding standard addressed by the task is:

Students describe … their own role as producers and consumers of goods and services. They explain the need to be an informed consumer.

The element of the Economics reasoning and interpretation standard addressed by the task are:

… students use the inquiry process to plan economics investigations about economic issues in the home, school or local community and form conclusions supported by evidence.
