Health and Physical Education Level 6

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 6 part of the assessment map for Health and Physical Education. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The Health and Physical Education Level 6 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of response that students produce when they are working at the Level 6 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 6 – Interval training

Context

Students were asked to select a sport that would be suited to interval training. Students were then asked to design and administer an interval training program including a full warm up, intervals of work, intervals of rest and a warm down at the end of the training session. Interviews were conducted with students in which they evaluated their interval training program.

Prior to undertaking this assessment task, students participated in a unit which focused on training for a specific sport. The unit included:

• an introduction to energy systems
• fitness components
• identification of different training methods
• the major principles of training including frequency, intensity, time and type.

Sample 1: Assignment – tennis

• Movement and physical activity – Level 6
  
• Demonstrates an understanding of interval training and why it is used.
• Provides an appropriate justification for the use of interval training to improve performance in tennis.
• Identifies an appropriate warm-up strategy including both aerobic and anaerobic activities as well as stretching and body conditioning activities.
• Identifies an interval training program which is suited to the selected sport of tennis, with appropriate periods of work and rest.
• Includes a warm-down strategy.

Sample 2: Continous training included in warm up – badminton

Annotation

• Movement and physical activity – Level 6
•  
• Applies continous training as a warm-up strategy that is appropriate to improve aerobic base for badminton.
• Strategy includes a combination of continuous movement in the form of slow jogging and high knee lift running as well as body strengthening circuit such as push-ups and sit-ups.

Sample 3: Interval training – basketball

Annotation

• Movement and physical activity – Level 6
•  
• Applies appropriate intervals of work for basketball including 20m sprint, 10m cone dodge and 10m sprint.
• Periods of work separated by a period of rest.
• Work to rest–ratio is 1:3, which is suitable for the sport of basketball.
• Note: The rest intervals have not been shown in this video, because of the need to keep the video short.
