English Assessment Map

 Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 4 part of the assessment map for English – Writing. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The English Level 4 standards describe what students should know and be able do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 4 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

 Sample at Level 4 – Keep Out (Narrative writing)

Context

Students were asked to write a narrative piece in response to the stimulus material of an illustration of a closed door with the words ‘Keep Out’ written on it. The writing was scaffolded through focused class discussion on: imagining what might be behind the door; suitable characters; plot development, and generating reader interest.

The writing was completed in one 45-minute session.

The elements of the writing standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) produce … a variety of texts for different purposes using structure and features of language appropriate to the purpose, audience and content of the writing.

(Students) use a range of vocabulary, a variety of sentence structures, and use punctuation accurately, including apostrophes.

(Students) employ a variety of strategies for writing, including ... editing and proofreading.

Paragraphs 1–4: The student uses plot sequence, narrative voice, dialogue and characterisation to tell a story.

Paragraphs 1–4: The student uses punctuation accurately throughout (with very few lapses) to present realistic dialogue and varies sentence length and construction for effect.

They use a range of vocabulary, a variety of sentence structures, and use punctuation accurately, including apostrophes.

Paragraph 3: The student uses paragraphing to present dialogue.

(Students) … produce … texts … using structures and features of language appropriate to the purpose, audience and context of the writing.

Paragraph 3: The student attempts to use suitable vocabulary to enhance the dialogue, for example, “There it is.” exclaimed Ben... “Oh!” gasped Tom.
