English Assessment Map

 Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 3 part of the assessment map for English – Writing. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The English Level 3 standards describe what students should know and be able do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 3 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

 Sample at Level 3 – A Place I Know Well (Descriptive writing)

Context

Students were asked to write a response to the topic, A Place I Know Well. Following class discussion that encouraged students to identify characteristics of their chosen place, students were given 45 minutes to write. Students worked without assistance from their teacher or fellow students.

The  elements of the writing standard addressed by the task are:

(Students) order information and sequence events using some detail or illustrative evidence …

(Students) meet the needs of audiences by including appropriate background information.

(Students) write a variety of simple and compound sentences and use verb tenses correctly.

(Students) … accurately use full stops, commas and question marks.

(Students) … spell most one- and two-syllable words with regular spelling patterns, and frequently used words which have less regular spelling patterns
