The English Level 2 standards describe what students should know and be able do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 2 standard.
Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.
Context
As writing stimulus, the picture story book Little Bat by Tania Cox (Working Title Press, South Australia), was read aloud to the class. The book portrays Little Bat’s reluctance to fly for the first time and her final success when she overcomes her fear.
Following class discussion about doing something for the first time, students wrote about a relevant personal experience.
Students worked without assistance from their teacher, although they were encouraged to use their usual classroom resources, including discussing their work with other students. The activity was completed in one 45-minute session which included 20 minutes writing time.
The elements of the writing standard addressed by the task are:
(Students) write short sequenced texts that include some related ideas about familiar topics.
(Students) write texts that convey ideas and information to known audiences.
(Students) use appropriate structures to achieve some organisation of the subject matter.
(Students) link ideas in a variety of ways using … adverbial phrases indicating time and place.
