Introduction

This work sample forms part of the assessment map for English – Speaking and listening. Other parts of the English – Speaking and listening assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right.

The English Level 1 standards describe what students should know and be able do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that student produce when they are working at the Level 1 standard.

The assessment task which generated this work sample was designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of selected elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 1 – The Queen

This task has a combined speaking and listening component.

Context for Speaking and listening component

Students worked in small groups. Each student was given a picture of a Queen. The teacher read instructions and students responded to the instructions by annotating the picture. They then worked in pairs to discuss in front of their group three things that were the same about their pictures, and three things that were different.

The elements of the Speaking and listening standard addressed by this task are:

They listen to and produce brief spoken texts that deal with familiar ideas and information.

They sequence main events and ideas coherently in speech …

THE QUEEN

1. Write your name above the Queen.

2. The Queen has a lovely necklace on. Colour it yellow.

3. What does 'Queen' start with? Write the letter that 'Queen' starts with next to her wand.

4. Count the number of jewels on the Queen’s crown. Write this number next to her crown.

5. Colour in the Queen’s earrings.

6. Colour in the Queen’s crown.

7. Draw a love heart next to the Queen and colour it in pink.

8. How many of the Queen’s fingers can you see? Write the number on her wrist.

9. Colour the Queen’s tongue pink.

10. Colour in the Queen’s wand.
