Reading Level 1

English Assessment Map

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 1 part of the assessment map for the Reading dimension of the English domain. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The standard below describes what students should know and be able to do when they achieve the Level 1 standard in the Reading dimension.

Reading Level 1

At Level 1, students match print and spoken text in their immediate environment. They recognise how sounds are represented alphabetically and identify some sound−letter relationships. They read aloud simple print and electronic texts that include some frequently used words and predominantly oral language structures. They read from left to right with return sweep, and from top to bottom. They use title, illustrations and knowledge of a text topic to predict meaning. They use context and information about words, letters, combinations of letters and the sounds associated with them to make meaning, and use illustrations to extend meaning.

Work Samples

The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students typically produce:

Annotations identify for each sample on the assessment map attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 1 – Button Sort

Context

Students were asked to bring buttons to school. Following class discussion on how to describe, compare and sort buttons, they were provided with vocabulary cards which they read as a group. Students then worked with a partner to illustrate and label different ways of sorting a set of buttons matching their illustrations with the relevant vocabulary from the card. A follow-up activity involved writing a simple sentence about their sorting. The activity took place over two 40-minute sessions.
