The Interpersonal Development Level 6 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level.
The assessment task which generated this work sample was designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of selected elements of the standard. The work sample illustrates progress towards, but does not fully demonstrate achievement of, the selected elements of the standard.
Context
Students were asked to complete a reflective essay about their experience of participating in a community action program. Students volunteered a half day a week in programs which were held at community centres such as an aged care facility or a nursing home.

Building social relationships – 5.5
A. Demonstrates knowledge of the characteristics of someone with dementia.
B. Comments reflect empathy for both elderly with dementia and the nursing staff working with dementia patients.
C. Identifies the skills necessary for working with the elderly including listening skills, patience, care and respect, however further evidence is required to demonstrate the student’s application of these skills when working with the elderly.
D. Demonstrates an awareness of appropriate behaviour in different social contexts; for example, attentiveness to a supervisor and respecting the elderly. Provides advice for other students about qualities needed to successfully work in a nursing home.
