The work samples in this section form the Level 5 part of the assessment map for Communication. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.
The Communication Level 5 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 5 standard.
Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.
While on camp at Phillip Island, students listened to a presentation from a Ranger and responded using a prepared proforma. During the presentation, students filled out a checklist to identify communication strategies used. Following the camp a teacher prepared students to interpret the information and reflect on the communication strategies used in the presentation through guided discussion. The response table was completed individually.
The discussion and response took approximately two 40-minute sessions.
The elements of the Listening, viewing and responding standard addressed by this task are:
(Students) interpret complex information and evaluate the effectiveness of its
presentation.
(Students) consider their own and others’ points of
view … and justify their own interpretations.
Stimulus
Students used the Phillip Island Responding to a Presentation worksheet to record responses.

Students participated in an open-learning project. A three-week program integrating a range of domains. Students selected a topic related to the theme of urban living and prepared and conducted a research project which included a two-day excursion to the city of Melbourne. Students worked in groups of four and, as a group, negotiated their project plan with a teacher. They designed a set of key research questions, interviewed respondents and used presentation software as a simple multimedia tool to present their report. The slides in this report were not intended to support an oral presentation.
The element of the Presenting standard addressed by this task is:
… students use the communication conventions, forms and language appropriate to the subject to convey a clear message across a range of presentation forms to meet the needs of the context, purpose and audience. They provide and use … reflection to develop effective communication skills.
