Civics and Citizenship Level 6

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 6 part of the assessment map for Civics and Citizenship. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The Civics and Citizenship Level 6 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 6 standard.

Sample at Level 6 – Global issues

Context

Students were asked to complete a research assignment on a current significant global issue and write a formal report. Issues included landmines, human rights and nuclear proliferation. Students were provided with the following headings to organise their reports:

Students worked in groups on a particular issue. Groups discussed issues, ideas and possible solutions. Individual students took responsibility for researching particular areas and for writing aspects of the formal report.

The element of the Civic knowledge and understanding Level 6 standard addressed by this task is:

(Students) take a global perspective when analysing an issue, and describe the role of global organisations in responding to international issues.

The elements of the Community engagement Level 6 standard addressed by this task are:

(Students) draw on a range of resources, including the mass media to articulate and defend their own opinions about political, social and environmental issues in national and global contexts.

(Students) develop an action plan which demonstrates their knowledge of a social or environmental issue and suggest strategies to raise community awareness of it.

Annotation

Civic knowledge and understanding – Level 6

A. Provides detailed information and evidence from a variety of sources which outlines and analyses the seriousness of the global issue of landmines.
B. Outlines the approaches of global organisations including the United Nations and its agencies, Non Government Organisations and other perspectives on the issue including that of US military veterans.

Element of the standard

(Students) take a global perspective when analysing an issue, and describe the role of global organisations in responding to international issues.

Community engagement – Level 6

C. Action Plan suggests a range of strategies for overcoming this global issue.
C. Reveals an understanding the roles and influence of particular powerful nations such as the US, Russia and China, organisations such as the G8, the importance of dialogue between nations and commitments to international treaties and the importance of developed countries helping developing countries.
D. Uses a range of contemporary online sources representing a number of perspectives. Could use more accurate bibliographic conventions for citing URLs.
