Civics and Citizenship Level 4

Introduction

The work samples in this section form the Level 4 part of the assessment map for Civics and Citizenship. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.

The Civics and Citizenship Level 4 standards describe what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 4 standard.

Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.

Sample at Level 4 – Responding to an issue

Context

Prior to undertaking the task, student groups identified issues in the local area. They were asked to undertake further research about the issue. Students individually produced a rough draft of a report which included an explanation of the issue, arguments for and against and a personal opinion. Feedback on the rough draft was provided by the teacher. Students were then asked to write a report about the issue and present it electronically.

The elements of the Community engagement standard addressed by this task are:

(Students) present a point of view on a significant current issue or issues and include recommendations about the actions that individuals and governments can take to resolve issues.

A. Provides introductory comment on the issue, the action that should be taken by local government and a reason for the point of view.
B. Identifies clear arguments for and against bulldozing the railway station.
