The work samples in this section form the Level 1 part of the assessment map for The Arts. Other parts of the assessment map can be accessed by using the menu on the right side of the screen.
The Level 1 Arts standard describes what students should know and be able to do at this level. The following work samples illustrate the kinds of responses that students produce when they are working at the Level 1 standard.
Annotations identify for each sample attributes of the student response that relate to specific elements of the standard.
This work sample was derived from an integrated unit of work focusing on Australian Birds and Animals. In the Art room, students looked at and talked about images of cockatoos used on calendars. Students then used poster paint, their fingers, hands and cardboard strips to create images for a class calendar. The task took students about 50 minutes to complete. Previously, students had experimented with ways of using cardboard strips for painting.
The elements of the Creating and making standard addressed by the task are:
… students make … visual arts works that communicate observations, personal ideas …
(Students), with guidance, use a variety of arts elements, skills, techniques and processes, media, materials …
